Obstetrical emergencies are life-threatening medical conditions that occur during the entire pregnancy. There are a number of illnesses and disorders of pregnancy that can threaten the well-being of both mother and foetus. Obstetrical emergencies may also occur during active labor, and after delivery. Some obstetrical emergencies of pregnancy are like placental abruption, placenta previa, preeclampsia/eclampsia etc. Obstetrical emergencies can be caused by social and biological factors, including stress, trauma, genetics and other variables.
Nursing management includes feto-maternal assessment, prevention of complications by continuous monitoring of vital signs and other signs and symptoms, providing information regarding the condition as well as the plan of care. The management of one mother and foetus heavily affects the management of the other.
It is important that midwives prepare themselves to assess the potential emergencies, to orient themselves to the establishment of early warning system, first responders, and conducting emergency mock drills and how to debrief the staff in the post- event. Each hospital has their own specific protocol for emergency situations, which guides the nurse midwife to provide a quality care in an effective manner in any obstetrical emergencies.?
