Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat will get accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health. People are generally considered obese when their body mass index(BMI), a measurement obtained by dividing a person's weight by the square of the person's height, is over 30 kg/m2, with the range 25–30 kg/m2 defined as overweight. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
From 1980 to 2013, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children increased by nearly 50%. Currently 10% of children worldwide are either overweight or obese. In 2014, the World Health Organization established a high-level commission to end childhood obesity.
In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults aged 18 years and older were overweight. Of these over 600 million adults were obese. The world prevalence of obesity doubled between 1980 and 2014. Among children 8-23% are obese.
