Therapeutic effect of thymol/zingerone, dietary polyphenols on radiation induced damage in Swiss albino mice- A pilot study

Archana PR Kamath SU

Radiotherapy is done to target the cancer cells and the radiation effects may end up in transient or permanent, injury to normal tissues. Investigations for effective and non-toxic compounds which mitigate the radiation induced damages coxed to increasing interest in naturally occurring antioxidants. Plants are the most elite source and have been widely used for treatment of various diseases in traditional way for time immemorial. Polyphenolic phytochemicals that are ubiquitously present in plants, well tolerated with minimal acceptable toxicity and therefore widely studied. Many studies dealing with polyphenols have focused on their antioxidant properties. Thymol and Zingerone are two such compounds, studied for their radioprotective ability when prophylactically administered. Our earlier work (Archana et al., 2009, Rao et al., 2009, 2010, Archana et al., 2011a, 2011b, Rao et al., 2011) on prophylactic radiation protection of Thymol and Zingerone and their satisfactory protection led us to study their protective ability in post irradiation scenarios. Hence the present study will be taken up to explore the radio-mitigating ability of Thymol and Zingerone in cell lines and animal models, so that it could plausibly avail in enterprising treatment approaches for planned and unplanned exposure to radiation.
