About the Department

The Department of General Surgery at Kasturba Medical College, 亚洲通_亚洲通官网 caters to the surgical needs of the local population by providing state-of-the-art facilities in addition to imparting core training to Undergraduate and Postgraduate trainees.

The Department of General Surgery has gained a reputation as one of the leading surgery programs in 亚洲通_亚洲通官网 India that was started as a part of Kasturba Medical College in 1953. Post-Graduation Residency Programme in General Surgery was established in 1972. Over the years the department has evolved with changing times and needs of society.

The department has been committed to providing outstanding patient care to the population of 亚洲通_亚洲通官网 Karnataka since the past 50 years. We have approximately 8000 admissions and 15000 operative procedures each year including a high volume of complex operative cases.

The department is also known to host an annual CME since 1983 (亚洲通_亚洲通官网 Clinifest) providing an opportunity to hone skills, gain competence and grow professionally. It is usually held in the 3rd week of September and is attended by post graduates from all over 亚洲通_亚洲通官网 India as well as National/亚洲通_亚洲通官网 faculty.

The department started laparoscopic surgery in 1996 and is now routinely performing basic and advanced laparoscopic procedures. We have a well-equipped Endoscopy Suite with diagnostic facilities for Upper GI and Lower GI diseases.

The department also boasts of a fully online logbook since 2019 which caters to the academic and clinical activities of the department in addition to serving as our online surgical case registry.

The department is equipped with an excellent endotrainer lab with 6 laparoscopy consoles for skill enhancement of budding surgeons.

We also have a rigorous post graduate training programme which is committed to producing well rounded surgeons with potential to become the next generation of leaders in surgery. We are currently eligible to admit 21 surgical residents each year exclusively through the NEET PG exam and counselling.

The department comprises of well-trained faculty, post graduate students and interns aiming to provide the best possible care for the thousands of patients visiting us every year. We have 8 independent surgical units comprising of a total of 32 teaching faculty to ensure the effective functioning of the daily clinical and academic duties. The department also has 2 administrative staff attached who serve as point of contact for all faculty and students as well as providing administrative support for various departmental activities.
